In Character Information
Name: Ryu 1/8192
Series: Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter
Canon Standing: Right after taking a sword to the throat from Bosch, and transforming into Wyrm form for the first time, when he up and passes the heck out.
Age: 16.
Birthday & Astrology Sign: Jan 20th, Capricorn. (made up by the applicant - he's completely unaware of the zodiac and of probably of his birth date)
Arcana: Temperance.
Personality:
Ryu is all about working within his own limits. The world he lives in has been set against him since birth, due to his phenomenally low D-Ratio – 1/8192, just barely clinging to the bottom rungs of society right above the reviled caste of people with D-Ratios so low, they're not even given numbers. This set the stage for a life fraught with obstacles. Yet despite the woeful situations he's doomed to end up in, he perseveres. He bides his time, he keeps a level head and he listens to the advice of othersand not just because it's a game mechanic tutorial!
Ryu takes some little pride in himself, but he definitely takes pride in the organization he's clawed his way into being a part of – the Rangers, basically the police force that protects civilians from monsters and dispels civil unrest. The Rangers' motto is “Observance of Order, Order by Suppression.” A little Orwellian, but it's what Ryu knows and is most trusting of – that it's the system that kept him alive as a child, and the system that he's sure will continue to protect many others in the future, and which promptly fails his expectations horribly once the game plot kicks in for reals.
Following this, it can be said that Ryu is definitely protective. It's a given, considering his job - but it shines especially so in relation to Nina. From the very start, he sees Nina as a little girl in a lot of trouble, and it quickly fosters a papa bear (papa dragon?) streak in him. He'll throw himself in harms way for her sake, something he proves extensively later in canon. He's also subconsciously aware of the slow death using his power is inflicting him with, though it spared him a fast one – it's a while after his canon point that he actively mentions it, but it's safe to assume he can detect the drain before that. Probably because, y'know, he ends up passing out from it and wondering what in the world he's become pretty much immediately.
Ryu is inherently trusting of the concepts of Law - an ordered mind and an ordered society is the one that survives threats, and one in chaos and disarray is the settlement that falls to destruction. He's accepting - if not a little uncomfortable with, sometimes - of the D-Ratio system, because he really doesn't want to be seen as one of those kinds of Low-D's when he's already come this far. Getting told bluntly that he'll never advance in his job and that it's amazing he's even there is upsetting, but isn't that evidence that really, a Low-D CAN be a Ranger, they CAN be more than just more fodder to pad the ranks of the terrorists in Trinity. He doesn't have to work outside the law to survive, and he really likes that fact.
Ryu will tolerate a lot of bullshit from people by merit of, well, it can't be helped, that's just what they're gonna do, and complaining would just be causing trouble. He'd likely play the good cop to Bosch's unstable narcissist cop, and the breaking point for his tolerance is something you have to push hard to find. ..It's definitely possible to find that button and just slam into it, though it's far more likely he'll just doormat into oblivion until you hit that one sweet spot.
..On the subject of emotional sweet spots. There's definitely things that upset and disturb him greatly - when Odjn's connection to him kicks in, Ryu becomes shaken and has yet to unshake. He knew the boundaries of what he could do well, and managed those fine - but now this unknown variable has come in, is obviously altering him, and pushes away what he knows in favor of brutal instincts coming from somewhere and something else entirely.
He's losing his intrinsic understanding of himself, and with that, the rest of the world becomes uncertain to him. From here, he could go one of two ways - cling desperately to what sense remains in the order he's been taught, or let himself be swept up by the unknown.
Backstory:
Ryu's history prior to the start of the game is a very large question mark, though a decent amount of things can be inferred from the setting. He is part of a very low caste in a very rigid caste system, and he is competent enough to be a low-level police officer and to have the qualifying marks for one of a higher rank than he can legally ever achieve. As the Rangers are a major face of the society that enforces his super low caste, we now also know that he has to have some faith in his society despite the travails it specifically imposes upon him.
I'd say he must have idolized the Rangers as a kid, much like an NPC boy you can meet in LowSector - they protect people, they get to fight monsters, and they're part of a huge extended organization that all work together for a common cause, so something a little distantly like family, or friends. Who wouldn't want in?
And then he actually went and got in. It wasn't perfect, sure. But he'd done it. It became obvious quickly that the Rangers' ranks were no paradise - but he could adjust. He could work with this. It's unknown how long Ryu's been part of the Rangers at the start of the game, but he obviously has some built-up experience, as he and Bosch are used to working together as partners.
It's on a particularly easy-sounding mission that everything goes wrong. They just have to help transport some cargo, that's all - while on the way there, though, Ryu happens to, uh, spontaneously hallucinate a big damn dragon corpse pinned up to a wall. He predictably stares at it, and it less than predictably starts talking cryptically into his head.
Then he wakes up on the floor to Bosch telling him he suddenly keeled over and asking if he's okay. They carry on, since, y'know, on the job and all.
It turns out the big damn dragon corpse was in the next room over, and Bosch boggles at it for a minute or so while Ryu proceeds to quietly freak out. This is his first encounter with Odjn, and the first impression that will give form to his Persona in Strings. The rest of the trip to go guard the lift is uneventful, but once the job's in progress, the terrorist organization Trinity launches an attack on them. Ryu and the cargo both fall deep into old areas of the underground, left abandoned to rogue Genics. He is most probably definitely dead.
He wakes up still alive, due to a timely intervention via mysterrrrious forces. This is when Ryu's been officially made into the Chosen of Odjn - his cool hax powers activate shortly after when he meets Nina for the first time, a little waif girl currently busy being menaced by a boss fight. Notably, though, the 'you're going to die horribly' counter still has yet to start going up.
Anyway he and Nina bond, and we get a refreshing take on the concept of mutism in game characters; that is, Nina is a mute but is not the player character. Then the terrorist who shot down the lift with a freakin' bazooka earlier shows up, and it turns out she's our third party member from the front of the game box, so they agree to temporarily work together on the grounds of getting Nina out of the major danger zone they're stuck in. They proceed to call each other ~Criminal~ and ~Ranger~ for the next dungeon or so, but at least aren't trying to kill each other or anything.
They get to the literal lowest place where any people live at all, EndSector - and promptly keep goingbecause EndSector is an utter pit because they're trying to get Nina to somewhere even safer-er. Bosch shows up at the lift station.
This happens.
(For my own records, the D-Counter is now effectively at 5.00%)
Canon Powers:
Ryu is a low-rank Ranger, basically a militarized police force. He's said by the game to have a promising amount of skill at the job, and is knowledgeable about a variety of special combat tactics developed specifically by the Rangers for dealing with monsters. The main tenet of Ranger tactics is that 'the battle begins far before the first blows are swapped,' basically meaning fight smart, and use lots and lots of traps.
Most important, though, is Ryu's intrinsic connection to the D-Construct Odjn, and the significance of the gameplay abstraction called the 'D-Counter:' a numerical representation of the slow corruption Odjn is inflicting on Ryu's body. When that number hits 100%, Ryu effectively dies, as Odjn's proper living body bursts out from his. For the sake of roleplay, I'm planning on freezing the D-Counter and translating Ryu's deadly connection to Odjn into his Persona. Use of Odjn's powers without actual Persona invocation will have harsh negative effects on and via Odjn the Persona, and Odjn the Persona will be, of course, significantly weaker than direct channeling, no matter how much it advances. Continual reliance on the direct route will permanently make the Persona more and more unruly.
D-Dash - gotta go fast! erh, I mean, Strike, probably, if a running-around skill can have that. Can be used any time rather than needing a D-Dive first, basically ZOOM GOES THE RYU! He gets wreathed in an aura of energy that makes him both run super fast and be able to knock aside anyone that pops up into his path. Basically, it's turning on invulnerability frames to ollies out of a situation as needed. Has worse backlash the longer it's used, can be sustained until his body decides woah, cool it there bucko, have a time out in the coma corner.
D-Diving - Mind. Activation of a 'dragon form' called Wyrm that is basically a huge rush of power drawn from Odjn, one that both grants overwhelming strength, and temporarily physically warps him into something rather inhuman. For the respects of gameplay, this is a glorified 'I win' button for use only in emergencies. For the respects of Strings, using this will forcibly merge him with his Persona for a brief time, and considering the inherent discord between himself and it - this will not be fun for either of them.
Vortex - Strike. the simplest, weakest attack in his Wyrm form. A swipe of his claw that gushes a threatening glow.
Hurricane - Strike. Hits multiple targets if you point it right, but for the more people he hits the worse the backlash. Basically a multi-target hit Vortex.
Twister - Strike. It's a double hit that looks about the same as Vortex, and has a significant knockback effect - manifesting as a chance of knocking the enemy down, about 40%.
D-Breath - Fire. The most powerful ability of the Wyrm form, one that's obviously painfully taxing to use. He can sustain the 'breath' indefinitely, until his body decides that functioning isn't fun anymore.
D-Charge - Mind. basically, he can call more and more of Odjn's power into himself, because, you know, sometimes the overpowered dragon form isn't overpowered enough already. This can be stacked up to ten times into truly ridiculous amounts of overkill, but only sticks for one attack. Considering that using this just four times and then attacking with, say, Twister, is enough to kill pretty much anything in the game... hi there, power nerfs! I thought I'd be seeing you!
Canon Weapons|Items:

Ryu trusted his body to be hardy - he'd run the gamut of the many unique illnesses LowSector had to offer as a kid, and none of those had taken him out back then. Sure, maybe he'd spend a day or so coughing up his lungs or fighting the chills, but that was before he went through the rigorous training to become a Ranger. Rangers didn't get sick days.
Right now, he wanted a sick day.
He'd never seen his skin turn red and stay red. He was used to sallow pale, not whatever was going on now - and it stung! Everywhere his clothes hadn't covered, something had scalded him badly. Ryu leaned miserably over his balcony, staring down at the completely unaffected passersby down below. What was going on with him...? He didn't think he'd done anything that would get him sick. He'd merely looked around town and stared at the sky and only ate things that he could reasonably identify as dishes he'd actually seen before. He'd done pretty much the same thing as the brief times he'd visited places above LowSector. It didn't make sense.
The initial thought of coming out the roost on the balcony was that the wind might do him some good, but the dwindling afternoon sun was still enough to (unbeknownst to Ryu) aggravate the sunburn. What he did know was that this really wasn't working, and that he can't exactly moodily slump more than he was already moodily slumping. And it hurt to move, so finding a better slump spot would just make things worse. It all just makes him more and more restless, and considering his confusion as to the root of the problem...
